During a visit to the Corelle pressware plant in Corning NY, I learned about the myriad variations in glass production that drive cost and limit factory output. The implications for the business loom large, but to the eye of a designer, the variations followed familiar patterns as they do in nature. In the case of embossed patterns, this observation sparked an idea: instead of fighting variation, what if we develop patterns that would be more forgiving of mis-registration? Textures inspired by natural materials could have wider tolerances and increase yield, while providing consumers with a fresh, modern look in laminated glass tableware.
