In the Hands of a Designer

The inspiration for the design of the Bosch PSM Primo came from the observation that spherical forms enable a variety of hand placements and accommodate frequent repositioning to encourage circulation and reduce fatigue during long periods of use. This insight came both from the experience I gained at TEAMS designing dozens of power tools over the course of 9 years, and also from painful memories of a summer in high school spent up on a ladder stripping, sanding, and staining my father's redwood siding.

The inspiration for the styling came from a combination of current and classic sci-fi vehicle design; a mash-up of digital bikes and robotic drones, with a dash of the Silver Surfer in its stance. Iterating the form through a series of progressively better foam models, the final shape provided an excellent canvas for the application of speed lines, aggressive vent details, dramatic color breaks, and the dimples as a nod to superior ergonomics, a hallmark of Bosch styling work that we did at TEAMS.
